A particle is projected with speed V m s⁻¹ at an angle of θ° above the horizontal. At the instant 4 s after projection the speed of the particle is 16 m s⁻¹ and its direction of motion is 30° above the horizontal. Find V and θ.

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (May/June 2019). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [B1] V cosθ=16cos30(=8√3=13.856...) Use horizontal motion
  2. [B1] V sinθ =16sin30+4g(=48) Use vertical motion
  3. [M1] V^2 = (16cos30)^2 + (16sin30+4g)^2 OR tanθ = (16sin30+4g) / (16cos30) Use Pythagoras's theorem or trigonometry of a right angled triangle
  4. [A1] V=50(.0)
  5. [A1] θ=73.9°
