A particle P is projected with speed 20 m s¯¹ at an angle of 60° below the horizontal, from a point O which is 30 m above horizontal ground.

  1. (i)Calculate the time taken by P to reach the ground.[3]
  2. (ii)Calculate the speed and direction of motion of P immediately before it reaches the ground.[4]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (Feb/Mar 2017). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [M1] Uses s = ut + ½ at² vertically
  2. [M1] Sets up a quadratic equation and attempts to solve it
  3. [A1] t = 1.27
  4. [B1] Uses v² = u² + 2as vertically (hence v = 30)
  5. [M1] V= √30² + (20cos60)² or tanθ=30/(20cos60)
  6. [A1] V = 31.6 ms⁻¹
  7. [A1] θ=71.6° with the horizontal Or 18.4° with the downward vertical
