A particle of mass 0.8 kg is projected with a speed of 12 m s⁻¹ up a line of greatest slope of a rough plane inclined at an angle of 10° to the horizontal. The coefficient of friction between the particle and the plane is 0.4.

  1. (i)Find the acceleration of the particle.[4]
  2. (ii)Find the distance the particle moves up the plane before coming to rest.[2]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (May/June 2017). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. R = 0.8g cos 10 [= 7.88]
  2. F = 0.4 × 8 cos 10 [= 3.15]
  3. -8 sin 10 – 3.2 cos 10 = 0.8a
  4. a = -5.68 ms⁻²
  5. 0 = 12² – 2 × 5.68 × s
  6. s = 144/(2 × 5.68) = 12.7 m
