A particle of mass 0.3 kg is attached to one end of a light elastic string of natural length 0.6 m and modulus of elasticity 9N. The other end of the string is attached to a fixed point O on a smooth horizontal surface. The particle is projected horizontally from O with speed 4 m s¯¹. Find the greatest distance of the particle from O.

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (Oct/Nov 2019). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [M1] 0.3 x 4² / 2 = 9e² / (2 * 0.6)
  2. [A1] e = 0.566 or 2√2 / 5
  3. [A1] Distance = 1.17 m
