Prove the identity `(1/(sin x) - 1/(tan x))² = (1 - cos x) / (1 + cos x)`

  1. (i)Prove the identity `(1/(sin x) - 1/(tan x))² = (1 - cos x) / (1 + cos x)`[4]
  2. (ii)Hence solve the equation `(1/(sin x) - 1/(tan x))² = 2/5` for `0 ≤ x ≤ 2π`.[3]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (Oct/Nov 2015). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [M1] Use of tan = sin/cos
  2. [M1] Use of s² = 1 - c²
  3. [A1] (1-c)² / ((1-c)(1+c)) OR (1-c)(1-c) / ((1-c)(1+c))
  4. [A1] (1-cos x) / (1+cos x) (ag)
  5. [M1] Making cos x the subject
  6. [A1] cos x = 3/7
  7. [A1] x = 1.13 or 5.16 (2π – 1st answer)
