Sketch the graph of y = |3x + 9| for -5 < x < 2, showing the coordinates of the points where the graph meets the axes.

  1. (i)Sketch the graph of y = |3x + 9| for -5 < x < 2, showing the coordinates of the points where the graph meets the axes.[3]
  2. (ii)On the same diagram, sketch the graph of y = x + 6.[1]
  3. (iii)Solve the equation |3x + 9| = x + 6.[3]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (May/June 2010). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. M1 for Idea of modulus correct
  2. A1 for Shape and position completely correct
  3. A1 for (0, 9) (-3, 0) indicated on graph
  4. B1 for Straight line with +ve gradient and +ve y intercept, correct position
  5. B1 for 3x + 9 = x + 6 => x = -1.5
  6. M1 for Solve –(3x + 9) = (x + 6) or (3x + 9)² = (x + 6)²
  7. A1 for x = -3.75
