Given that A = (2 1 / -2 5)

  1. (i)find the inverse of the matrix A + I, where I is the identity matrix.[3]
  2. (ii)Hence, or otherwise, find the matrix X such that AX + X = B, where B = (14 / 4).[2]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (May/June 2011). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [1] (i) A + I = (3 1 / -2 6)
  2. [2] (i) (A+I)^-1 = 1/20 * (6 -1 / 2 3)
  3. [1] (ii) X = (A + I)^-1 * B evaluated to matrix with 2 entries
  4. [1] (ii) X = (4 / 2)
