A security system uses sensors, a camera and a microprocessor to capture images of each person entering a large shopping mall.

  1. (a)Describe how the sensors, camera and microprocessor interact to identify certain people entering the mall.[5]
  2. (b)Each image taken requires 1 MB of storage. If the camera captures an image every 5 seconds over a 24 hour period, how much storage is required? Give your answer in gigabytes and show all your working.[2]
  3. (c)The shopping mall has over 100 cameras. At the end of each day all these cameras send their images, captured over the last 24 hours, to a central computer. Explain why the mall uses dedicated fibre optic cable rather than transmitting the data over the local broadband network.[2]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (Oct/Nov 2015). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [1] naming a suitable sensor, e.g infra-red, pressure, motion sensors, send signal/data to microprocessor
  2. [1] signal/data is converted to digital (using an ADC)
  3. [1] microprocessor instructs/send signals to camera to capture image/video
  4. [1] captured image/video data sent to microprocessor
  5. [1] microprocessor compares the image/video with stored images/video...
  6. [1] ...if person detected = stored image
  7. [1] ...alert given to signal a person has been identified
  8. [1] microprocessor compares the biometric data from an image/video with stored biometric data for images/video
  9. [1] if biometric data matched = stored data
  10. [1] alert given to signal a person has been identified
  11. [1] Continual/repeated process
  12. [1] number of photos = 12 × 60 × 24 = 17280
  13. [1] memory requirement = 17280/1024 = 16.9 (16.875) / (17280/1000 = 17.28/17.3 is acceptable)
  14. [1] (data transmission) is faster
  15. [1] more secure/safer (because it is a dedicated line)
  16. [1] (fibre optic transmission) is more reliable
