A particle P moves in a straight line starting from a point O. At time t s after leaving O, the velocity, v m s⁻¹, of P is given by v = (2t – 5)³.

  1. (i)Find the values of t when the acceleration of P is 54 m s⁻².[3]
  2. (ii)Find an expression for the displacement of P from O at time t s.[3]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (May/June 2017). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. *M1 Uses a = dv/dt
  2. DM1 Solves for t
  3. A1 t = 1,4
  4. *M1 Uses s = ∫ v dt
  5. DM1 Uses s = 0 at t = 0
  6. A1 s = (2t-5)⁴/8 - 625/8
  7. *M1 Uses a = dv/dt
  8. DM1 Solves for t
  9. A1 t = 1,4
  10. *M1 Uses s = ∫ v dt
  11. DM1 Uses s = 0 at t=0 (may be implied)
  12. A1 s = 2t⁴ - 20t³ + 75t² – 125t
