A particle P is projected vertically upwards from horizontal ground with speed ums¯¹. P reaches a maximum height of 20m above the ground.

  1. (a)Find the value of u.[2]
  2. (b)Find the total time for which P is at least 15m above the ground.[3]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (Feb/Mar 2022). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [M1] 0 = u² - 2 × 10 × 20 OR (Complete method to set up an equation in u only. Use of v² = u² + 2as or finding time to reach maximum height (t = 2) and using this value to set up another equation in u only.)
  2. [A1] u = 20
  3. [M1] 15=20t - 1/2 × 10 × t² (Use of s = ut + 1/2at² and attempt to set up an equation from which a relevant t value can be found. Must be using their u and a=-10)
  4. [A1] t = 1 or t = 3
  5. [A1 CWO] Total time = 2 s
