The equation of a curve is such that dy/dx = 4/(x-3)³ for x > 3. The curve passes through the point (4, 5). Find the equation of the curve.

  1. Find the equation of the curve.[3]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (May/June 2023). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [B1] [y]=(x-3)^(-3+1)/(-2) or 4/(x-3)^(-2)/(-2) [ + c ] OE Allow 4/(-3+1) and -3+1 for the power.
  2. [M1] Correct use of (4,5) to find c in an integrated expression (defined by the correct power and no extra x's or terms).
  3. [A1] OE -2/(x-3)^2 must be simplified to -2. Condone c = 7 as their final line as long as either y or f(x) = is seen elsewhere. Do not ISW if the result is of the form y = mx+c.
