The rate of chemical reactions is affected by changes in temperature and pressure.

  1. (a)(i)Draw a curve on the axes to show the Boltzmann distribution of energy of particles in a sample of gaseous krypton atoms at a given temperature. Label the curve T1 and label the axes.[2]
  2. (a)(ii)On the diagram in (a)(i), draw a second curve to show the distribution of energies of the krypton atoms at a higher temperature. Label the second curve T2.[1]
  3. (b)(i)State two assumptions of the kinetic theory as applied to an ideal gas.[2]
  4. (b)(ii)2.00 g of krypton gas, Kr(g), is placed in a sealed 5.00 dm³ container at 120°C. Calculate the pressure, in Pa, of Kr(g) in the container. Assume Kr(g) behaves as an ideal gas. Show your working. pressure = Pa[3]
  5. (b)(iii)State and explain the conditions at which krypton behaves most like an ideal gas.[2]
  6. (c)(i)Use this information to complete the reaction profile diagram for the formation of KrF₂. Label Eₐ and ∆H on the diagram. Assume the reaction proceeds in one step. [Figure 1.c.i][2]
  7. (c)(ii)Explain, in terms of activation energy, Eₐ, and the collision of particles, how an increase in temperature affects the rate of a chemical reaction.[2]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (Feb/Mar 2021). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [1] M1: shape of curve correct
  2. [1] M2: labelled axes (vertical: number of particles; horizontal: kinetic / particle energy)
  3. [1] Labelled line (T2) with lower peak to right of original
  4. [1] no VdW forces present / no forces of attraction between particles
  5. [1] (ideal gas) particles have no / negligible volume (compared to container)
  6. [1] collisions between (ideal gas) particles / walls of container are perfectly elastic
  7. [1] (ideal gas) particles behave as rigid spheres
  8. [1] M1: moles of krypton = 2.00 ÷ 83.8 (= 0.0239 mol)
  9. [1] M2: conversion of value into consistent units for pV = nRT (e.g. 5.00 dm³ to 5.00 × 10⁻³ m³, 120 °C to 393 K)
  10. [1] M3: p = (0.0239 × 8.31 × 393) / (5.00 × 10⁻³) = 15600 Pa
  11. [1] M1: low pressure AND high temperature
  12. [1] M2: Either of: volume of particles is negligible (compared to volume of container) OR VdW forces are insignificant (owing to high kinetic energy of particles)
  13. [1] M1: end higher than start AND 'hill' for Eₐ
  14. [1] M2: Eₐ AND ∆H labelled
  15. [2] rate increases; (because) more particles have energy > activation energy; frequency of successful collisions increases (any two points linked for the explanation for 2 marks)
