Express 2x² - x + 6 in the form p(x - q)² + r, where p, q and r are constants to be found.

  1. (i)Express 2x² - x + 6 in the form p(x - q)² + r, where p, q and r are constants to be found.[3]
  2. (ii)Hence state the least value of 2x² - x + 6 and the value of x at which this occurs.[2]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (May/June 2014). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [B3,2,1,0] one mark for each of p, q, r correct; allow correct equivalent values. If B0, then SC2 for 2(x - 1/4)² + 47/8 or SC1 for correct values but incorrect format
  2. [B1ft + B1ft] 47/8 is min value when x = 1/4; strict ft their 47/8 and their 1/4; each value must be correctly attributed; condone y = 47/8 for B1, or (1/4, 47/8) for B1B1
