A student investigates the current in different types of circuit.
- (a)State the relationship between current, charge and time.[1]
- (b)Figure 8 shows two resistors connected in series to a power supply. [Figure 8 shows two resistors, R1 (5.0 Ω) and R2 (10 Ω), connected in series with an ammeter and a 6.0 V power supply.] (i) Calculate the total resistance of the circuit.[2]
- (b)(ii)Calculate the current in the circuit.[2]
- (b)(iii)Calculate the potential difference across the 5.0 Ω resistor.[2]
- (c)Figure 9 shows the two resistors connected in parallel to the power supply. [Figure 9 shows two resistors, R1 (5.0 Ω) and R2 (10 Ω), connected in parallel with an ammeter measuring total current and a 6.0 V power supply.] State two ways the current from the power supply will differ from the current in the series circuit in (b).[3]

Mark scheme
Marking points from the official mark scheme. The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.
- Question 17(a)
- current = charge / time / I = Q / t (1)
- Question 17(b)(i)
- R(total) = R1 + R2 (1)
- 5.0 + 10 = 15 (Ω) (1)
- Correct answer without working gains full marks.
- Question 17(b)(ii)
- rearrangement V = IR to I = V/R (1)
- 6.0 / 15 = 0.40 (A) (1)
- Correct answer without working gains full marks.
- Question 17(b)(iii)
- V = IR (1)
- 0.40 × 5.0 = 2.0 (V) (1)
- Allow (6 / 15) x 5 or use of ratio 1/3 (5/15) of 6V.
- Correct answer without working gains full marks.
- Question 17(c)
- any three from: (3)
- current from supply will be greater (1)
- current in each resistor will be different / not the same / current in 5Ω resistor is greater than in 10Ω resistor (1)
- current splits (between the resistors) (1)
- total resistance is less (1)
- voltage across each resistor is the same (and equal to supply voltage) (1)
- Do not accept 'current is parallel' or 'voltage is parallel'
