A student investigates the motor effect. A wire carrying a current is placed in a uniform magnetic field.

  1. (a)(i)State the rule used to determine the direction of the force on the wire.[1]
  2. (a)(ii)Describe how the magnitude of the force on the wire can be increased.[2]
  3. (b)A wire of length 0.15 m carrying a current of 2.0 A experiences a force of 0.030 N when placed perpendicular to a magnetic field. Calculate the magnetic field strength.[3]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme. The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. 2(a)(i)
  2. B1 for Fleming's Left-Hand Rule (or motor rule)
  3. 2(a)(ii)
  4. B1 for increase current (in the wire)
  5. B1 for increase magnetic field strength (e.g., use a stronger magnet, add more turns to electromagnet)
  6. 2(b)
  7. M1 for F = BIL OR B = F / (IL)
  8. C1 for correct substitution: B = 0.030 / (2.0 × 0.15)
  9. A1 for 0.10 T (allow 0.1 T)
