A student uses the apparatus shown in Figure 14 to investigate moments.

  1. (a)State the principle of moments.[2]
  2. (b)(i)The student places a mass of 400 g on the left-hand side of the metre rule, as shown in Figure 14. The pivot is at the 50 cm mark. Show that the weight of the 400 g mass is approximately 4.0 N. [g = 9.8 N/kg][2]
  3. (b)(ii)The student places a weight on the right-hand side of the metre rule so that the rule is balanced. The centre of the 400 g mass is at the 10 cm mark. The centre of the weight is at the 80 cm mark. Calculate the size of the weight. Show your working.[3]
  4. (c)The student moves the pivot to the 40 cm mark. The 400 g mass remains at the 10 cm mark. Explain what the student must do to balance the metre rule.[3]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme. The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. 14 (a) M1 for for (an object in) equilibrium / balanced (condition)
  2. A1 for total clockwise moment = total anticlockwise moment
  3. 14 (b)(i) M1 for F = m × g OR 0.400 × 9.8
  4. A1 for 3.92 (N) which is approximately 4.0 N
  5. 14 (b)(ii) M1 for calculation of distance of 400g mass from pivot (40 cm OR 0.4 m)
  6. M1 for calculation of moment of 400g mass (4.0 × 0.4) = 1.6 (Nm) OR F1d1 = F2d2
  7. A1 for 1.6 ÷ 0.3 = 5.3 (N)
  8. 14 (c) B1 for anticlockwise moment is now greater (than clockwise moment) / rule is unbalanced / rule will tilt left
  9. B1 for move the (right-hand) weight further away / move the (right-hand) weight to a larger distance from the pivot
  10. B1 for increase the (right-hand) weight / add more weights to the right-hand side
