Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme. The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. Level 1 (1-4 marks): General statements or descriptive accounts of the Great Depression or the growth of the Nazi Party. Lacks a clear argument.
  2. Level 2 (5-8 marks): Describes the impact of the Great Depression AND/OR other reasons for Nazi growth, but lacks a clear argument or balanced evaluation of importance.
  3. Level 3 (9-12 marks): Addresses the statement, showing awareness of the Great Depression's impact and at least one other significant factor. Attempts to evaluate their relative importance, but may lack depth or sustained argument.
  4. Level 4 (13-16 marks): Provides a sustained and well-supported argument which directly addresses 'how far' by evaluating the importance of the Great Depression against other significant factors (e.g., weaknesses of Weimar, Nazi appeal, propaganda, role of Hitler, fear of communism), leading to a reasoned and balanced conclusion.
