A curve C has parametric equations x = 3cos(t) + 2, y = 4sin(t) - 1, for 0 ≤ t < 2π. (a) Show that the Cartesian equation of C is (x - 2)²/9 + (y + 1)²/16 = 1.

  1. (a)Show that the Cartesian equation of C is (x - 2)²/9 + (y + 1)²/16 = 1.[3]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme. The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. M1 for attempting to make cos(t) and sin(t) the subject.
  2. A1 for cos(t) = (x - 2)/3 and sin(t) = (y + 1)/4.
  3. A1 for using cos²(t) + sin²(t) = 1 to obtain the given Cartesian equation.
