An iron beaker containing liquid X is placed on the bench in a laboratory. Liquid X begins to evaporate slowly.

  1. (a)Explain why the evaporation causes the temperature of liquid X to decrease.[2]
  2. (b)(i)The induction heater contains a coil of wire in which there is a high-frequency alternating current (a.c.). The alternating current in the coil generates a current in the base of the iron beaker by electromagnetic induction. Explain how electromagnetic induction generates the current in the base of the iron beaker.[3]
  3. (b)(ii)The current in the base of the iron beaker causes the base to become hot. The temperature of the liquid at point P just above the base increases. Fig. 5.2 shows the position of point P. Explain, in terms of particles, why the density of liquid X decreases as its temperature increases. [Figure 5.2][3]
  4. (b)(iii)The decrease in the density of the liquid at point P causes the transfer of thermal energy throughout liquid X. Explain how this happens.[2]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (Oct/Nov 2025). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [B1] fast(est) moving particles (more likely to) escape/molecules with high(er) (kinetic) energy escape?)
  2. [B1] work done/energy needed to remove particles (from liquid)
  3. [B1] (average kinetic) energy of molecules remaining decreases
  4. [B1] energy transferred from internal energy of liquid/(kinetic) energy of particles
  5. [B1] magnetic field (of coil) mentioned
  6. [B1] magnetic field (due to a.c.) is changing / alternating/reversing
  7. [B1] e.m.f. in (base of) container
  8. [B1] speed of particles increases
  9. [B1] particles push each other apart
  10. [B1] volume of liquid increases
  11. [B1] less dense/heated liquid rises
  12. [B1] denser/cooler liquid sinks or liquid near surface sinks or convection (current) established
