Fig. 6.1 shows the circuit symbol for a relay and two labelled terminals. [Figure 6.1]
- (a)By referring to Fig. 6.1, explain the effect of a current passing from A to B.[2]
- (b)Fig. 6.2 shows two circuits linked by a relay. The heater transfers energy at a rate of 40W when it is connected to a 12V supply. [Figure 6.2] Switch S is closed. The variable resistor is adjusted so that its resistance R increases from 0. Fig. 6.3 shows how the power transferred in the 40W heater varies as R increases from 0. The graph shows a sharp decrease when the resistance R reaches RH. [Figure 6.3] Explain the shape of the graph in Fig. 6.3.[3]
- (c)(i)The 40W heater connected to the 12V supply is switched on. Calculate: the energy transferred in the heater in 2.0 minutes energy = ............................................................. J[2]
- (c)(ii)the resistance of the heater. resistance = ........................................................ Ω[3]

Mark scheme
Marking points from the official mark scheme (Oct/Nov 2024). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.
- [1] current / it in AB / the (magnetising) coil produces magnetic field
- [1] (relay) switch (between X and Y) closes or switch attracted by magnetic field / coil or (relay) switch made of iron
- [1] (initially) the current in the relay coil is large or relay switch (in relay circuit / relay) is closed or heater is connected to a 12 V supply or voltage of supply does not change or heater is switched on
- [1] (as R increases) current / magnetic field (in relay coil) decreases
- [1] (at R = RH) relay switch (in relay coil) opens or magnetic field not strong enough to hold switch closed
- [1] (E =) Pt or 40 × 2.0 or 40 × 2.0 × 60 or 80
- [1] 4800 (J)
- [1] I = P / V or I = 40 / 12 or I = 3.3 (A)
- [1] (R =) V/I or 12/3.3
- [1] 3.6 (Ω)
