A filament lamp connected to a 12V power supply transfers 24W of power.

  1. (a)Calculate:
  2. (a)(i)the current in the lamp current = ................................................................. A [2][2]
  3. (a)(ii)the resistance of the lamp in this circuit. resistance = ................................................................. Ω [2][2]
  4. (b)A student has a battery of electromotive force (e.m.f.) 12V. The student uses the battery in a circuit with the 12V filament lamp to obtain a range of suitable readings and plots the current-voltage graph for the lamp.
  5. (b)(i)Fig. 7.1 shows the battery and the filament lamp. [Figure 7.1] On Fig. 7.1, complete the circuit diagram of a suitable circuit. You will need to add additional components.[2]
  6. (b)(ii)On Fig. 7.2, draw the shape of the current-voltage graph for the filament lamp. [Figure 7.2][2]
  7. (b)(iii)State what happens to the resistance of a filament lamp as the applied voltage increases and explain one reason for this happening.[2]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (Oct/Nov 2024). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [C1] (I =) P/ V or 24/12
  2. [A1] 2.0 (A)
  3. [C1] (R =) V/ I or 12/2.0
  4. [A1] 6.0 (Ω)
  5. [B1] variable resistor in series with battery and lamp
  6. [B1] ammeter in series with battery and lamp and voltmeter across lamp
  7. [B1] potential divider circuit correctly connected
  8. [B1] ammeter in series with lamp and voltmeter across lamp
  9. [M1] curved line with gradient > 0 and starting at origin
  10. [A1] curve of decreasing gradient and gradient always > 0
  11. [B1] resistance increases
  12. [B1] temperature increases/filament gets hot or particles / ions vibrate more vigorously (and impede electron flow)
