Answer all the questions in the spaces provided. 1 (a) Make estimates of:

  1. (a)(i)the mass, in g, of a new pencil mass = ........................................................... g [1][1]
  2. (a)(ii)the wavelength of ultraviolet radiation. wavelength = .................................................... m [1][1]
  3. (b)The period T of the oscillations of a mass m suspended from a spring is given by T = 2π √(m/k) where k is the spring constant of the spring. The manufacturer of a spring states that it has a spring constant of 25Nm⁻¹ ± 8%. A mass of 200 x 10⁻³kg ± 4 × 10⁻³kg is suspended from the end of the spring and then made to oscillate.
  4. (b)(i)Calculate the period T of the oscillations. T= ..................................................................... s [1][1]
  5. (b)(ii)Determine the value of T, with its absolute uncertainty, to an appropriate number of significant figures. T= .............................................................. + ................................................. s [3][3]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (Oct/Nov 2019). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [A1] mass in range 1-20 g
  2. [A1] wavelength in range 1 × 10⁻⁸ m to 4 × 10⁻⁷ m
  3. [C1] T = 2π × (200 × 10⁻³ / 25)⁰.⁵
  4. [A1] = 0.56 s
  5. [C1] percentage uncertainty = (2% + 8%) / 2 (= 5%); or fractional uncertainty = (0.02+0.08) / 2 (= 0.05)
  6. [C1] ΔT = 0.56 × 0.05; = 0.028 (s)
  7. [A1] T = (0.56 ± 0.03) s
