Fig. 8.1 shows a potential divider circuit containing two resistors R₁ and R₂. [Figure 8.1]

  1. (a)There is an input voltage of 6.0V. Complete Table 8.1 to show the output voltage for different values of the resistances of the two resistors. [Table 8.1][3]
  2. (b) EITHER (i)In the circuit shown in Fig. 8.1, resistor R₁ is replaced by a light dependent resistor (LDR). In the space below, draw the circuit symbol for an LDR.[1]
  3. (b) EITHER (ii)The LDR is moved from darkness into daylight. State what happens to the resistance of the LDR and the output voltage. resistance output voltage[1]
  4. (b) EITHER (iii)A potential divider circuit can also be used to produce an output voltage that changes with temperature. State the name of the component that is used instead of the LDR.[1]
  5. (b) OR (i)A simple bistable circuit contains NOR gates. In the space below, draw the circuit symbol of a NOR gate.[1]
  6. (b) OR (ii)Describe what is meant by a bistable circuit.[2]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (May/June 2021). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [B1] top row 3(.0) V
  2. [C1] potential divider formula / working shown e.g. 1200/2000 (× 6) or 800 / 2000 (×6) or split 6 (V) in ratio 1200:800 or I = 6/2000
  3. [A1] second row 3.6 (V)
  4. [B1] correct symbol with arrows towards resistor
  5. [B1] resistance decreases and output voltage increases
  6. [B1] thermistor
  7. [B1] correct symbol
  8. [B1] two (stable) states
  9. [B1] switches (between states) by an applied signal or exhibits memory
