Glass and iron are both conductors of heat. However, glass is a poor conductor of heat and iron is a good conductor of heat.

  1. (a)Describe, using ideas about particles, how the conduction of heat takes place in glass and in iron. You should make it clear why iron is a better conductor of heat. conduction in glass ............................................................................................................................................................................. ............................................................................................................................................................................. ............................................................................................................................................................................. ............................................................................................................................................................................. conduction in iron ............................................................................................................................................................................. ............................................................................................................................................................................. ............................................................................................................................................................................. ............................................................................................................................................................................. 2. (b)(i)Fig. 4.1 shows apparatus used to show expansion. [Figure 4.1 (glass tube, liquid level X, glass flask, water, heat source)] The glass flask, full of water, is heated. A student is surprised when the liquid level X in the glass tube falls for a few seconds before it rises. Suggest why the liquid level falls and why it then rises. ............................................................................................................................................................................. ............................................................................................................................................................................. ............................................................................................................................................................................. ............................................................................................................................................................................. Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (May/June 2020). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [1] glass molecules vibrate
  2. [1] molecules pass on energy / vibration from one to another
  3. [1] contains many / more free electrons / electrons that can move
  4. [1] electrons collide with atoms / molecules (and gain / lose energy)
  5. [1] glass warms up (before water) or glass expands first
  6. [1] water expands more than glass
  7. [1] convection or hot water rises
  8. [1] convection current formed or hot water rises and cold water falls or density of water falls (as it heats)
