Fig. 7.1 shows a child sitting on a sledge on a snow-covered hill of constant slope. At time t = 0, the child and the sledge begin to move down the hill in a straight line. When the child sees a wall ahead, he applies the brake. The child and sledge continue to travel in a straight line until they come to a stop before hitting the wall.

  1. (a)Fig 7.2 shows how the speed of the child and sledge varies over the whole of the journey. Explain why, between t = 0 and t = 26 s, the speed varies in the way shown by the graph.[3]
  2. (b)At t = 26s, the front of the sledge is 35m from the wall. Determine the distance between the front of the sledge and the wall when the sledge stops.[3]
  3. (c)(i)Determine the size of the deceleration.[3]
  4. (c)(ii)The mass of the child is 46 kg and the mass of the sledge is 9.0 kg. Calculate the resultant force on the child and sledge as they decelerate.[2]
  5. (c)(iii)State the energy transfer that is taking place as the child and sledge decelerate.[2]
  6. (d)At t = 26 s, when the brake is first applied, the child jerks forwards on the sledge. Explain why.[2]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (Oct/Nov 2022). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [1] acceleration / increase in speed and gravity / weight mentioned
  2. [1] air resistance / friction increases (with speed)
  3. [1] terminal / constant velocity reached or air resistance (becomes) equal to accelerating force
  4. [1] (distance travelled =) area under the graph or (x =) ½(u + v)t or ½ x 15.2 x 4.0
  5. [1] 35- (½ × 15.2 × 4.0) or 30.4 or 30
  6. [1] 4.6 m
  7. [1] (magnitude of deceleration =) gradient or Dv / Dt or 15.2 / 4.0 or equivalent numbers (from graph) in same ratio
  8. [1] 15.2/4.0 or equivalent numbers in same ratio
  9. [1] 3.8 m / s²
  10. [1] (F =) ma or (46 + 9.0) × 3.8 or 55 × 3.8
  11. [1] 210 N
  12. [1] from kinetic energy (and from gravitational potential energy)
  13. [1] to thermal energy and no intermediate energy
  14. [1] due to his mass or mass mentioned
  15. [1] (his) mass resists a change to its state of motion
