Fig. 2.1 shows a satellite moving at a constant speed in a circular orbit around the Earth. [Figure 2.1] Speed is a scalar quantity but velocity is a vector quantity.

  1. (a)State how a scalar quantity differs from a vector quantity.[1]
  2. (b)Underline every vector quantity in the list. distance displacement force length mass time[1]
  3. (c)(i)There is a resultant force acting on the satellite in Fig. 2.1. Explain how the motion of the satellite shows that a resultant force is acting on it.[2]
  4. (c)(ii)State the cause of this force.[1]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (Oct/Nov 2020). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [B1] it / a scalar does not have a direction
  2. [B1] displacement and force underlined
  3. [B1] direction (of motion) is changing
  4. [B1] velocity is changing (with time) or it is accelerating (which requires a resultant force)
  5. [B1] gravitational attraction / field of the earth
