A 60W filament lamp is powered by the 240 V mains electricity supply. The lamp is switched on.

  1. (a)(i)Calculate: the current in the lamp[2]
  2. (a)(ii)the resistance of the lamp.[2]
  3. (b)(i)The lamp is now unplugged from the mains supply and connected in series with two 1.5V cells. Fig. 6.1 is the circuit diagram. State the reading on the voltmeter.[1]
  4. (b)(ii)State and explain how the resistance of the lamp now differs from the value calculated in (a)(ii).[2]
  5. (b)(iii)When a filament lamp blows, it very often does so immediately after being switched on. Suggest why this is the case.[1]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (Oct/Nov 2019). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [C1] (I =) P/ V or 60/240
  2. [A1] 0.25 A
  3. [C1] (R =) V// or 240/0.25
  4. [A1] 960 Ω
  5. [B1] 3.0 V
  6. [B1] resistance is smaller
  7. [B1] (filament at a) lower temperature
  8. [B1] current surge (due to lower resistance when cold)
