Some students were asked how long they had each spent doing homework the day before. The results are summarised in the table. Time (t hours) 0<t≤0.5 0.5<t≤1 1<t≤1.5 1.5<t≤2 2<t≤2.5 2.5<t≤3 Girls 0 5 8 6 0 1 Boys 3 3 4 5 3 2 [Figure 24.1]

  1. (a)On the grid, draw a frequency polygon to represent this information for the girls and another frequency polygon for the boys.[3]
  2. (b)Write down the modal group for the girls.[1]
  3. (c)Make a comment comparing the distribution of the times spent by the girls with the times spent by the boys.[1]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (May/June 2014). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [3] Correct frequency polygons drawn
  2. [3] Consisting of these marks which can be awarded singly:
  3. [3] B1 for linear scale up to 8 on frequency axis
  4. [3] B1 for plots at correct heights
  5. [3] B1 for plotting their points at centre of interval and joined with ruled lines
  6. [1] 1 < t ≤ 1.5
  7. [1] Correct comment(s) making a comparison of times between girls and boys.
  8. [1] E.g. The mode for the boys is higher than the mode for the girls The range of times was longer for boys than for girls. Most girls spent between 1 and 2 hours, but boys times more evenly spread between 0 and 3 hours
