Fig. 5.1 shows a plant growing in an area of well-watered soil. [Figure 5.1]

  1. (a)The plant was held by the stem and pulled from the ground before being re-planted in another area of well-watered soil. It was observed that the plant wilted for several days after being re-planted and then recovered its original appearance. Suggest an explanation for this observation.[4]
  2. (b)Photosynthesis takes place in the leaves of the plant. Complete the equation below for photosynthesis using either words or symbols. + → + Glucose (C6H12O6)[1]
  3. (c)(i)Name the parts labelled P, Q and R in Fig. 5.2. P Q R[3]
  4. (c)(ii)Suggest how the upper surface of the same leaf would appear different from the lower surface shown in Fig. 5.2 when viewed using a microscope. Explain the reason for this difference.[2]

Marking points from the official mark scheme (Oct/Nov 2015). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [max. 4] (a) wilting: root hairs removed/roots damaged ;
  2. [max. 4] (a) stem/xylem damaged ;
  3. [max. 4] (a) less water absorbed;
  4. [max. 4] (a) plant loses water/transpires ;
  5. [max. 4] (a) cells lose water/cells become flaccid;
  6. [max. 4] (a) recovery: root (hairs) regrow ;
  7. [max. 4] (a) (more) water absorbed ;
  8. [max. 4] (a) cells gain water again/become turgid ;
  9. [1] (b) carbon dioxide + water → oxygen;
  10. [3] (c) (i) P = (lower) epidermal cell/epidermis/epidermal layer;
  11. [3] (c) (i) Q = guard cell ;
