A curve has equation y = 4/(3x-4) and P (2, 2) is a point on the curve.

  1. (i)Find the equation of the tangent to the curve at P.[4]
  2. (ii)Find the angle that this tangent makes with the x-axis.[2]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (May/June 2011). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [4] (i) dy/dx = -4(3x-4)⁻² × 3; B1 Correct without ×3. B1 For ×3.; If x = 2, m = -3; M1 A1 Correct line eqn. co (for normal M0A0); Eqn of tangent y − 2 = -3(x - 2)
  2. [2] (ii) tanθ = ±(-3); M1 Correct link with (± his gradient); A1√ co (accept acute or obtuse) or -71.6° or radians; → θ = ±108.4° (or ±71.6°) or scalar product, tanθ = y-step ÷ x-step or use of tan (A - B) M1A1 for each
