A particle P is projected vertically upwards from horizontal ground with speed 15ms⁻¹.

  1. (a)Find the speed of P when it is 10m above the ground.[2]
  2. (b)At the same instant that P is projected, a second particle Q is dropped from a height of 18m above the ground in the same vertical line as P. Find the height above the ground at which the two particles collide.[3]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (Feb/Mar 2023). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [M1] Use constant acceleration in an attempt to find v or v² , e.g. v²=u² +2as with a=±g.
  2. [A1] Speed = 5ms⁻¹
  3. [*B1] Use of s = ut + ½at² for either. Allow if a not substituted, need both expressions with opposite sign of t² term and the same a .
  4. [DM1] Allow s_P + s_Q = ±18 and solve for t Must have s_P and s_Q of the correct form.
  5. [A1] So height = 10.8m
