Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (Oct/Nov 2025). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. Commence division and reach partial quotient of the form 3x³ ± 3x² or 3x⁴ - 2x² = (x + 1)(Ax³ + Bx² + Cx + D) + Ex + F, and reach A = 3 and B = ± 3
  2. Obtain quotient 3x³ – 3x² + x − 1 Do not ISW
  3. Obtain remainder of 1 Do not ISW.
  4. f(-1) = 3 - 2 = 1 = remainder
  5. Use division or inspection or compare coefficients
  6. Obtain quotient 3x³ – 3x² + x - 1
