The equation of a curve is such that dy/dx = kx³ + 2/x², where k is a constant. The curve passes through the point S (2, 20) and the gradient of the curve at S is 65/2.

  1. (a)Find the value of k.[1]
  2. (b)The coordinates of a point T on the curve are (1, t). Find the value of t.[5]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (Oct/Nov 2025). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [B1] k = 4
  2. [B2] Integrates dy/dx to y = (kx^4)/4 - 2/x [+c] (B1 for one term correct).
  3. [M1] Substitutes x=2, y=20 into their integrated expression to find c.
  4. [A1] c = 5.
  5. [A1] t = 4.
