The diagram shows the curves with equations y = √5x² +7 and y = 27/(2x+5) for x ≥ 0. The curves meet at the point (2, 3). Region A is bounded by the curve y = √5x² +7 and the straight lines x = 0, x = 2 and y = 0. Region B is bounded by the two curves and the straight line x = 0.

  1. (a)Use the trapezium rule with two intervals to find an approximation to the area of region A. Give your answer correct to 3 significant figures.[3]
  2. (b)Find the exact total area of regions A and B. Give your answer in the form klnm, where k and m are constants.[3]
  3. (c)Deduce an approximation to the area of region B. Give your answer correct to 3 significant figures.[1]
  4. (d)State, with a reason, whether your answer to part (c) is an over-estimate or an under-estimate of the area of region B.[2]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (Oct/Nov 2024). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [B1] (a) Use y-values √7, √12 and √27, or decimal equivalents
  2. [M1] (a) Use correct formula, or equivalent, with h=1
  3. [A1] (a) Obtain 4.75
  4. [M1] (b) Integrate to obtain form kln(2x + 5)
  5. [A1] (b) Obtain correct (27/2)ln(2x+5)
  6. [A1] (b) Apply limits 0 and 2 to obtain (27/2)ln(9/5) or exact equivalent of required form and no extra terms
  7. [B1 FT] (c) Obtain 3.19
  8. [*B1] (d) State under-estimate
  9. [DB1] (d) ...because (a) is over-estimate due to tops of trapezia being above curve
