Two small smooth spheres A and B, of equal radii and of masses 4 kg and m kg respectively, lie on a smooth horizontal plane. Initially, sphere B is at rest and A is moving towards B with speed 6 m s¯¹. After the collision A moves with speed 1.5 m s¯¹ and B moves with speed 3 m s⁻¹. Find the two possible values of the loss of kinetic energy due to the collision.

  1. Find the two possible values of the loss of kinetic energy due to the collision.[6]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (Oct/Nov 2020). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [1] For using conservation of momentum (either case)
  2. [1] 6x4=3m + 4 × 1.5 or 6x4=3m-4 × 1.5
  3. [1] m = 6 and m = 10
  4. [1] KE = ½ × m × v² FT 4.5m for KEB
  5. [1] Uses KE loss = KE before – KE after
  6. [1] Loss of KE = 40.5 J or 22.5 J
