The function f is defined by f : x → 2x² – 12x + 7 for x ∈ R.

  1. (i)Express 2x² – 12x + 7 in the form 2(x + a)² + b, where a and b are constants.[2]
  2. (ii)State the range of f.[1]
  3. (iii)The function g is defined by g : x → 2x² – 12x + 7 for x ≤ k. State the largest value of k for which g has an inverse.[1]
  4. (iv)Given that g has an inverse, find an expression for g⁻¹(x).[3]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (Oct/Nov 2018). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [B1] 2(x - 3)²
  2. [B1] -11
  3. [B1FT] Range (of f or y) ≥ 'their – 11'
  4. [B1FT] (k =) -"their a” also allow x or k ≤ 3
  5. [*M1] y = 2(x - 3)² - 11 → y + 11 = 2(x - 3)²
  6. [DM1] (y + 11)/2 = (x - 3)² → x - 3 = ±√((y + 11)/2)
  7. [A1] x = 3 - √((y + 11)/2)
