A curve has equation 3x² - y² – 4 ln(2y + 3) = 26. Find the equation of the tangent to the curve at the point (3, −1).

  1. A curve has equation 3x² - y² – 4 ln(2y + 3) = 26. Find the equation of the tangent to the curve at the point (3, −1).[6]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (Feb/Mar 2020). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. Differentiate -y² to obtain -2y(dy/dx)
  2. Differentiate -4ln(2y+3) to obtain -8/(2y+3) (dy/dx)
  3. Attempt differentiation of all terms Dependent on appearance of at least one dy/dx
  4. Substitute x = 3, y=-1 to find numerical value of dy/dx
  5. Obtain dy/dx = 3
  6. Obtain equation y = 3x-10 OE
