Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (May/June 2011). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. Candidates should adopt the persona of Margaret and explore her feelings about Jack’s death and the inheritance going to Jackie.
  2. Good answers will reflect Margaret’s complex emotions: grief for her father, resentment/jealousy towards Jackie, bitterness towards her mother, and her own sense of loss and sacrifice.
  3. She might reflect on her own relationship with Jack and the expectations she had.
  4. Consider her position as a mother, and her desire for Jackie to have a better life, contrasted with her personal feelings.
  5. Look for Margaret’s characteristic voice, perhaps a mix of pragmatism, emotional suppression, and underlying yearning.
