P1 is a slide of a stained transverse section through a plant root.
- (a)(i)Draw a large plan diagram of the region of the root on slide P1 indicated by the shaded area in [Figure 2.1]. Use a sharp pencil. draw this region [Figure 2.1] Use one ruled label line and label to identify the xylem.[5]
- (a)(ii)Observe the cells in the centre of the root on slide P1. Select a group of four adjacent cells. Each cell must touch at least two other cells. • Make a large drawing of this group of four cells. • Use one ruled label line and label to identify the cell wall of one cell.[5]
- (b)(i)[Figure 2.2] shows a photomicrograph of a transverse section through a root. This root is different to the root on slide P1. You are not expected to be familiar with this root section. [Figure 2.2] Identify three observable differences, other than colour, between the root in [Figure 2.2] and the root on slide P1. Record these three observable differences in an appropriate table.[4]
- (b)(ii)[Figure 2.3] is a photomicrograph of the same root section that is shown in [Figure 2.2]. [Figure 2.3] Use the scale bar on [Figure 2.3] to calculate the magnification of the photomicrograph and the actual diameter of the root section identified by the line X-Y. Show your working and use appropriate units. magnification = x .......................................................................... actual diameter = ..........................................................................[5]

Mark scheme
Marking points from the official mark scheme (Feb/Mar 2023). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.
- [5] 1 uses most of the available space and no shading; 2 draws correct section and no cells ; 3 draws minimum number of tissues (at least 3 layers of tissue); 4 draws correct position of xylem ; 5 label line and label to xylem ;
- [5] 1 lines continuous, thin and sharp ; 2 draws each cell touching at least two of the other cells ; 3 two lines around each cell and three lines where cells touch; 4 detailed shapes of cells and intercellular space between cells ; 5 label line and label to cell wall;
- [4] organises comparison into two-column table (same feature stated and compared in each row) or three-column table (first column defines feature to be compared); plus any three from: position of vascular tissue towards periphery in the centre ; size of xylem vessels smaller larger ; endodermis not visible visible ; width of cortex narrow wide ; epidermal layer less intact more intact ;
- [5] 1 measures length of scale bar and units ; 2 measures length of X-Y and units ; 3 shows length of scale bar divided by 2 ; 4 shows length of X-Y divided by magnification ; 5 correct answer and units ;
