Fig. 2.1 is a photomicrograph of a stained transverse section through a plant root. You are not expected to be familiar with this specimen. [Fig. 2.1]
- (a)(i)Use a sharp pencil for drawing. You are expected to draw the correct shape and proportions of the different tissues. Draw a large plan diagram of the region of the root section shown by the shaded area in [Fig. 2.2]. Use one ruled label line and label to identify the endodermis.[5]
- (a)(ii)J1 is a stained transverse section through a root of a different type of plant. You are not expected to be familiar with this specimen. Observe the xylem vessel elements in the centre of the root section on J1. Select one large xylem vessel element and three adjacent cells. Each cell must touch at least one other cell. • Make a large drawing of this group of four cells. • Use one ruled label line and label to identify the lumen in one cell.[5]
- (b)Identify observable similarities and differences between the root section in [Fig. 2.1] and the root section on J1. Record the observable similarities and differences in Table 2.1. Table 2.1 feature Fig. 2.1 J1 similarities differences[4]
- (c)[Fig. 2.3] is a photomicrograph of the same root section as in [Fig. 2.1]. The line P-S shows the diameter of the whole root section. The line Q-R is the diameter of the vascular tissue. Calculate the percentage of the diameter of the whole root section that is vascular tissue. Show your working.[5]

Mark scheme
Marking points from the official mark scheme (Oct/Nov 2020). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.
- [5] 2(a)(i) 1 suitable size and number of tissue layers ; 2 draws correct region of the root section and no cells drawn ; 3 correct proportions of stele compared to the diameter of the root; 4 draws subdivision of the stele ; 5 label line and label to endodermis ;
- [5] 2(a)(ii) 1 suitable size and all lines sharp and continuous ; 2 draws only four whole cells ; 3 cell wall drawn as two lines around each cell and three lines where cells touch; 4 each cell touches at least one other cell; 5 label line and label to the lumen in one cell;
- [4] 2(b) 1 records at least one similarity and at least one difference ; 2, 3 and 4 any three from: feature Fig. 2.1 J1 similarities position of vascular tissue central central ; size of xylem lumens large large ; shape of root circular circular ; differences hairs many fewer ; endodermis present absent ; outer layer smooth / continuous broken / not continuous ;
- [5] 2(c) 1 records measured diameter of the whole root section; 2 records measured diameter of the vascular tissue ; 3 shows measurement for the diameter of the vascular tissue divided by the diameter of the whole root section ; 4 answer multiplied by 100; 5 (final answer) to the correct degree of accuracy;
