Solve the following simultaneous equations. log2(x + 3) = 2 + log2y log2(x + y) = 3

  1. (a)Solve the following simultaneous equations. log2(x + 3) = 2 + log2y log2(x + y) = 3[5]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (Oct/Nov 2014). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [B1] (a) log2(x + 3) = log2 y + 2 → x+3=4y
  2. [B1] (a) log2(x + y) = 3 → x+y=8
  3. [M1] (a) x+3=4(8-x). Eliminate y or x from two linear three term equations
  4. [A1] (a) 5x=29 → x=5.8, oe
  5. [A1] (a) y = 2.2 oe
