  1. (a)Solve the equation 2 cosec x + 7 / cos x = 0 for 0° ≤ x ≤ 360°.[4]
  2. (b)Solve the equation 7 sin(2y – 1) = 5 for 0 ≤ y ≤ 5 radians.[5]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (Oct/Nov 2013). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [B1] cosec x = 1/sin x inserted into equation
  2. [DB1] tan x = -2/7
  3. [B1] 164.1 One correct value. ♫ on 180+(164.1) Must come from tanx =. Condone 164 and 344
  4. [B1] 344.1 Deduct 1 mark for extras in range
  5. [B1] (2y – 1) = 0.79..or 2.34... Allow 0.8, 2.3 or 45.6°.
  6. [M1] Find y using radians Add 1 then divide by 2 on a correct angle
  7. [A1] 0.898 (or 0.9 or 0.90) One correct value
  8. [A1] 1.67, 4.04 and 4.81(45) Another correct value. Final two values.
