2 DO NOT USE A CALCULATOR IN THIS QUESTION. The polynomial p is such that p(x) = 6x³ - 35x² +34x+45.
- (a)Find p(x) in the form (2x-5)q(x)+r, where q(x) is a polynomial and r is a constant.[3]
- (b)Hence write the expression p(x)-5 as a product of linear factors.[2]
- (c)Hence write down the solutions of the equation p(x) = 5.[1]
Mark scheme
Marking points from the official mark scheme (May/June 2024). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.
- [3] M1 for a valid attempt to obtain the quotient by algebraic long division, synthetic division, factorising (2x – 5) or by forming an identity
- [3] A1 for each (q(x)=3x²-10x-8, r=5)
- [2] M1 For a correct attempt to factorise
- [2] A1 Must see p(x) -5 as a product of linear factors
- [1] B1 FT on their 3 terms quadratic q(x)
