The polynomial p(x) = (2x-1)(x+k)-12, where k is a constant.

  1. (i)Write down the value of p(-k).[1]
  2. (ii)When p(x) is divided by x + 3 the remainder is 23. Find the value of k.[2]
  3. (iii)Using your value of k, show that the equation p(x) =-25 has no real solutions.[3]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (May/June 2019). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [B1] -12
  2. [M1] (2(-3)-1)(-3+k)-12 = 23 oe or 2(-3)²+(2k-1)(-3)-k-12 = 23
  3. [A1] k = -2
  4. [M1] expansion and simplification to a 3 term quadratic equation equated to zero, using their k.
  5. [M1] using discriminant for their three term quadratic equation
  6. [A1] cao for correct discriminant and correct conclusion
