Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (May/June 2018). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. [M1] Eliminates one of the unknowns
  2. [A1] Simplifies to a correct 3-term quadratic: 2x² + 4x - 16 [= 0] oe or 2y² - 6y - 36 [= 0] oe
  3. [M1] Factorises or solves (x+4)(x-2) = 0 oe or (y+3)(y-6) = 0 oe; FT their 3-term quadratic in x or y;
  4. [A2] (2, 6) and (-4, -3) oe (A1 for either (2, 6) or (-4, -3) or A1 for x = 2 and x = -4 or y = 6 and y = -3)
