Find the coordinates of the stationary point of the curve y = (x+2)/√(2x-1).

  1. Find the coordinates of the stationary point of the curve y = (x+2)/√(2x-1).[6]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme (May/June 2018). The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. M1 attempt to differentiate quotient or equivalent product
  2. B1 d/dx (2x-1)¹/² = (2x-1)⁻¹/² for a quotient
  3. B1 d/dx (2x-1)⁻¹/² = -(2x-1)⁻³/² for a product
  4. A1 All other terms correct either dy/dx = [√(2x-1) - (x+2)(2x-1)⁻¹/²] / (√(2x-1))² or dy/dx = (2x-1)⁻¹/² - (x+2)(2x-1)⁻³/²
  5. M1 equate to zero and attempt to solve When dy/dx = 0, 2x-1=x+2
  6. A1 x=3
  7. A1 y = 5/√5, √5, 2.24
