This question is about electromagnetic induction.
- (a)(i)A student performs an experiment using a magnet and a coil of wire connected to a voltmeter. Figure 16 shows the magnet moving into the coil. State what the voltmeter shows when the magnet moves into the coil.[1]
- (a)(ii)State what the voltmeter shows when the magnet stops moving inside the coil.[1]
- (b)(i)The student then uses the apparatus shown in Figure 17. The primary coil is connected to a power supply. The secondary coil is connected to a voltmeter. State the name of this apparatus.[1]
- (b)(ii)State the type of power supply that must be used for a reading to be shown on the voltmeter.[1]
- (b)(iii)Explain why this type of power supply must be used.[3]
- (b)(iv)The primary coil has 200 turns and the secondary coil has 50 turns. The power supply has a potential difference of 6.0 V. Calculate the potential difference across the secondary coil. Show your working.[3]

Mark scheme
Marking points from the official mark scheme. The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.
- 16 (a)(i) B1 for voltmeter shows a reading / p.d. / voltage / e.m.f. / current
- 16 (a)(ii) B1 for voltmeter shows zero / no reading
- 16 (b)(i) B1 for transformer
- 16 (b)(ii) B1 for alternating current / a.c.
- 16 (b)(iii) M1 for (a.c. produces a) changing / fluctuating magnetic field
- M1 for (changing magnetic field in primary) links with / cuts secondary coil
- A1 for (causing) e.m.f. / voltage / current (to be) induced / generated (in secondary coil)
- 16 (b)(iv) M1 for Vp/Vs = Np/Ns OR 6.0/Vs = 200/50
- M1 for Vs = 6.0 × 50 / 200
- A1 for 1.5 (V)
