This question is about mains electricity.
- (a)State the potential difference of the mains supply in the UK.[1]
- (b)State two differences between direct current (d.c.) and alternating current (a.c.).[2]
- (c)(i)An electric kettle operates at a potential difference of 230 V. The power of the kettle is 2.8 kW. Calculate the current in the kettle. Show your working.[3]
- (c)(ii)Calculate the energy transferred by the kettle in 4.0 minutes. Show your working.[4]

Mark scheme
Marking points from the official mark scheme. The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.
- 13 (a) B1 for 230 (V)
- 13 (b) B1 for d.c. flows in one direction and a.c. changes direction / flows backwards and forwards
- B1 for d.c. (constant) voltage/current and a.c. (continuously) changing voltage/current (magnitude)
- 13 (c)(i) M1 for conversion 2.8 kW = 2800 W
- M1 for P = V × I OR I = P/V
- A1 for 2800 / 230 = 12.2 (A)
- 13 (c)(ii) M1 for (time conversion) 4.0 × 60 = 240 (s)
- M1 for E = P × t OR E = V × I × t
- M1 for 2800 × 240 OR 230 × 12.2 × 240
- A1 for 672 000 (J) OR 6.72 × 10⁵ (J)
