The equation of a curve is y = x³ – 6x² + 9x – 2. Find the coordinates of the turning points of the curve.
Mark scheme
Marking points from the official mark scheme. The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.
- M1 for dy/dx = 3x² – 12x + 9
- M1 for equating dy/dx = 0 (3x² – 12x + 9 = 0)
- M1 for solving 3x² – 12x + 9 = 0 (e.g., (3x-3)(x-3) or 3(x-1)(x-3)) to get x=1 and x=3
- M1 for substituting x values into y = x³ – 6x² + 9x – 2
- A1 for (1, 2) and (3, –2)
