Given that 2^(2x – 1) = 8^(4 – y) and 3^(x + 1) = 9^(y + 3). Work out the value of x and the value of y.
Mark scheme
Marking points from the official mark scheme. The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.
- M1 for 2^(2x – 1) = (2^3)^(4 – y) or 3^(x + 1) = (3^2)^(y + 3)
- M1 (dep) for 2x – 1 = 3(4 – y) or x + 1 = 2(y + 3)
- A1 for 2x – 1 = 12 – 3y (oe) and x + 1 = 2y + 6 (oe)
- M1 for a correct method to solve the simultaneous equations (elimination or substitution)
- A1 for x = 5, y = 0
